Black and Whites lock out archrivals Metro United

Round 12 – Adelaide City vs Metro United match report by Chloe Lau

Adelaide City thundered past archrivals Metro United in an extremely dominant 6-0 win on Friday night at VALO Football Centre.

It was another convincing display by the Black and Whites, as they had the upper hand in the game and dictated majority of the play. Chelsie Dawber and Daniela Di Bartolo completed a brace each, while Yuka Sasaki and Tiarn Powell were on target as well.

Their dominant streak sees them lock out another top four team for the second week in a row now.

Metro almost had the lead in the second minute of the game, due to a fumble in City’s defence line which left the opposition with an empty goal. Fortunately enough, the resulting shot flies above the crossbar and City were let off with a warning.

Moments after, Sasaki found the back of the net at the end of a quick transition passage by the team. Her initial shot was blocked by Metro’s goalkeeper Hunter Strudwick, but the ball kindly rebounded right at Sasaki’s feet and she rolled it into goal.

Dawber was next to get on the scoreboard in the 14th minute, when the ‘keeper was unable to smother her shot from just outside the 18-yard box.

It was Dawber again four minute later, capitalising on a corner clearance to send it past Metro’s defence into goal.

City struck again even before everyone could catch their breath, this time via Di Bartolo who chipped the ball over the goalkeeper after Dawber laid off a well-weighted pass in front of her.

Metro came out from the sheds in the second half looking more dominant, as they pressured City’s midfield and defence to camp in their own defensive half.

However, it was Powell who found the target in the 56th minute. Dawber drew Strudwick off her line for a one-on-one challenge, before passing the ball off to her captain to easily tap into an empty goal.

Di Bartolo had the last say of the night, when she struck a powerful shot into far post – too fiery for the goalkeeper to stop even though she got her hands to it.

Dawber commented on the huge win post-match:

“I think, overall, it was a great performance by all the girls. We worked really hard and we didn’t stop until the end of the game.”

“We kept pushing and the goals kept coming. We worked hard for each other.”

“Week by week, we’re slowly building on our performances. We’re each working on our weaknesses and those 1% to make ourselves better players, and therefore a better team, hopefully that will keep continuing throughout the year.”

Adelaide City will face off against West Adelaide – the only team to defeat City this season – in a huge double-header clash on Friday, 7th June, at Oakden. Kick-off at 6:15PM.
