Adelaide City rebounded back from last week’s loss against West Adelaide to claim the all-important three points, thanks to a 2-0 win against old foes Adelaide University in Round 7 of the WNPL at VALO Football Centre.
The match was a physical affair, and the Black and White had to fight hard for the ball to end up in the back of the net. However, the flood gates opened when Dylan Holmes finally scored at the 73rd minute, with Chelsie Dawber following just seven minutes after.
City sounded the warning bells first within the opening five minutes, when Isobel Dahlen-Flight bombed down the right flank and sent a pinpoint cross into the box, but Tiarn Powell could not make great contact with the ball and skied it instead.
Once both teams started to settle into the game, there were equal possession distributed amongst them but goalscoring opportunities were far and few in between
Matilda McNamara almost opened her scoring account at the half-hour mark, but her header fell straight into the arms of Evelyn Goldsmith, who stood strong in goals to deny City’s chances.
Uni almost capitalised on City’s slow start in the second half, when one of their players, Elle Pirintzis, was left unmarked in the back post. She overshot her attempt and City was let off the hook.
Dawber had the best chance of the night for a goal when Goldsmith’s poor clearance ended right at her feet. Unfortunately, her heavy first touch let her down and the goalkeeper was able to recover from her mistake.
Relief and passion could be felt from around the grounds when Dylan Holmes finally found the back of the net in the 73rd minute. Holmes got on the end of Powell’s cross from the left wing – a manoeuvre repeated multiple times throughout the night which evaded everyone – and volleyed it past the keeper.
Dawber doubled the goal margin in the 80th minute, when she drew Goldsmith off her line and sent a fiery shot past the ‘keeper. There was a moment of uncertainly when the ball rebounded off the inside of the far post, but fortunately it landed past the goal-line.
Yuka Sasaki almost had the last say of the night when her long-distance strike looked to dip below the crossbar and forced Uni’s keeper into a diving save to tip it behind the goal.
This win sees City clear on top of the leader board by three points, as the WNPL season continues to heat up with plenty of tight contests.
Adelaide City will face off against Fulham United next Friday, 8:15PM at VALO Football Centre.
