Blues Strike Back – City Out Of Cup

Adelaide City suffered a 2-1 loss to Adelaide Blue Eagles in round 2 of the Westfield FFA Cup at Adelaide City Park on ANZAC Day. A late Nicholas Bucco strike was not enough to see the Black and Whites advance to the next phase of the tournament, after goals either side of half-time from Blue Eagles ensured their progression.

With City having beaten the same opposition two days ago 3-1 in round 8 of the PS4 National Premier League, the hosts were expecting a motivated Blue Eagles outfit.

Adelaide City fielded a number of changes from the two teams’ previous encounter 48hrs prior, with regulars Jordan Pudler, Thomas Love and Nikola Mileusnic starting on the bench, while marksman Anthony Costa was rested all together nursing a minor injury.

It was the visitors who struck first inside seven minutes. Yvan Boyokino found space on the wing whose cross evaded everyone except for the unmarked Anthony Dimas, comfortably finishing from close range.

The Black and Whites almost immediately replied through Josh Mori only to see his one-on-one effort hit straight into gloveman Pedram Sourgani.

As the match ebbed and flowed, both sides enjoyed their share of possession, but it would be Antoni Trimboli of Blue Eagles who fashioned the best chance.

Trailing 1-0 at half-time, City boss Damian Mori was desperate for a response after the interval.

Tempers flared when a small melee broke out near the centre circle and it appeared to spark the home team into life.

Mileusnic, brought on as a substitute, unleashed a shot from a partially cleared corner on the edge of the 18-yard box though it failed to trouble the Blue Eagles’ goalkeeper.

Boyokino doubled the lead for the away outfit, dispatching a clinical finish past the onrushing Ben Moore.

Nicholas Bucco pulled one back for City with a powerful low-driven shot, but unfortunately it proved a mere consolation.

Incidentally, it was his third goal against Blue Eagles across the weekend, following a brace on Saturday.

Despite the defeat, Adelaide City will be hoping to continue their impressive league form when they travel away to face WT Birkalla this coming Saturday.
