City cruise past NTC

Adelaide City have claimed a comfortable 3-0 win over FFSA NTC in their second meeting of the WNPL season last night, in round 9 at the VALO Football Centre.

The Black and Whites had to work hard to score against an improved side in NTC and held on strong to close out the game with a clean-sheet, especially when the latter turned up the pressure during their quick counters. They managed to nab the crucial three-points, courtesy of goals by Chelsie Dawber, Yuka Sasaki and Nanako Sasaki.

City set off warning bells within the opening 10 minutes when Nanako Sasaki’s long-distance effort looked to be in on goal, but it flew over the bar instead.

Dawber was the first person to get onto the scoresheet, after she unleashed a clinical strike past NTC’s goalkeeper Erin Murphy within the 18-yard box at the 26th minute.

Yuka Sasaki almost increased the goal margin by two just six minutes later, but her shot deflected off the right post and NTC’s defence were able to clamp down on that opportunity.

After slightly altering their formation during the half-time break, City came back out from the sheds in the second-half looking fresher and more effective on the ball.

City had another close opportunity, this time from Dylan Holmes at the end of a wonderful one-two pass. Unfortunately, Murphy read the play well and pulled off a fantastic close-range save to deny Holmes her goal.

Yuka Sasaki found the back of the net at the hour-mark with an agile far-post header, jumping out of nowhere to head home Isobel Dahlen-Flight’s cross from the right flank.

Nanako Sasaki attempted another long-range strike but again, NTC’s ‘keeper pulled off a huge diving save to keep Sasaki’s shot out of the top right corner.

It’s third-time lucky for Nanako Sasaki though, as she finally scored during injury time – assisted by none other than her younger sister Yuka Sasaki. The latter sent in a pinpoint cross from the left wing, and Sasaki pounced on the ball to send it into goal with a first-time volley.

NTC tried to pull back a consolation goal within the dying moments of the game with a huge chip to catch Kendall Jenner out, but she read the attempt well to pluck it out from the sky and into her safe arms – right on the referee’s whistle to signal the end of the game.

Isobel Dahlen-Flight commented on the win after the game:

“It was a pretty tough game tonight; I think it wasn’t our best game.”

“But we pressed harder and played well, and got the three points at the end with a clean-sheet.”

“We changed our formation and that helped a lot in the second half. We just came out with a new attitude and I think that showed.”
