Despite leading the count from Round 1 Budin was strongly challenged throughout the count by Freddy Agius. With only the Grand Final votes to be counted the award could have gone to either player. However, Budin’s performance in the Grand Final was enough to earn him enough votes to see him win the prestigious award.
In a nice touch, Charlie Di Bartolo captain of the 1959 Adelaide City team, prior to this season the last team to win four championships in succession, presented Nick Budin with his award and a cheque for $1000.
