Eagles Wings Clipped

A late brace from Anthony Costa has helped Adelaide City to their fourth successive win of the season as they defeated Adelaide Blue Eagles 3-1 in a hard fought contest at Adelaide City Park on Saturday afternoon.

The win ensured that City maintain their perfect start to the 2017 PlayStation 4 NPL season, while the Blue Eagles succumbed to their second loss in a row.

It was a frantic, end to end start to the encounter, and City’s first real chance of the game came in the 24th minute when Mamadi Kamara went on a trademark incursion but the explosive winger could only fire the shot into Blue Eagles goalkeeper John Solari.

City continued to press and 10 minutes later Dylan Smith’s long-range effort was well-saved by Solari.

However in the 40th minute the visitors had undoubtedly the closest chance of the game, as Yvan Boyokino got in behind the City defence before Paul Blefari made a strong challenge to prevent the winger from opening the scoring.

The score was deadlocked at 0-0 at the break, and 10 minutes into the half it was City this time who went close.

Kostopoulos was in behind the opposition’s defence but fired the ball into the crossbar.

However, the linesman’s flag was raised for offside so the goal would not have stood.

It was back and forth for the second half with no real opportunities created, but as the game looked like it would end 0-0 it took an exciting twist.

Nic Bucco’s corner was fired into the edge of the six-yard box before Evan Kostopoulos was brought down and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.

Bucco stepped up to take the penalty and made no mistake, sending Solari the wrong way as he slotted his penalty into the bottom right hand corner.

However, City’s celebrations were cut short and the visitors equalised one minute later.

City were unable to deal with a corner, and Blue Eagles skipper Chris Annicchiarico nodded the ball home from close range, looking to save the game for his squad.

In the 85th minute, substitute Thomas Love went on a run – reminiscent to his one against the Western Sydney Wanderer in the 2014 FFA Cup – before firing a shot into Solari, but the Blue Eagles couldn’t deal with the rebound, and star striker Anthony Costa clinically finished it home from close range.

The visitors tried to press to salvage a point from the fixture, but the game was put to rest in the 91st minute with a splendid effort from Costa.

Costa had the ball on the corner of the 18 yard box, and caught Solari off his line and sensationally chipped the ball into the back of the net and City were again victors.

It was a courageous victory for City who move onto next week’s top-of-the-table clash with MetroStars on the back of a perfect start to the season.
