Round 13 – Adelaide City vs West Adelaide match report By Euan James (@euanjames_)
Adelaide City and West Adelaide played out a scoreless draw at Adelaide City Park in round 13 of the National Premier League.
As you’d expect the biggest rivalry in South Australian football was very fiery in the opening minutes and a number of fouls were conceded.
After just three minutes, Chris Pepe missed a golden opportunity to hand City an all-important lead as he was free in the box and completely missed a pinpoint cross from Zak Waters.
West Adelaide pressed forward and continued to concede fouls. The returning Adriano Pellegrino was in the heart of the midfield battles and received a blood nose for his troubles after fifteen minutes.
In the 24th minute, another great opportunity went begging – Nicholas Bucco slipped Stefan Casalbore through on goal who shrugged off his defender and audaciously tried to chip Lewis Moss in the West Adelaide goal.
West Adelaide replied ten minutes later with a shot that flashed across the face of the goal. The first half ended with Adelaide City well in control after having the two better chances.
City opened the second half with Adriano Pellegrino looking to unleash Casalbore on the left wing.
In the 50th minute, Anthony Costa picked up the ball from the West Adelaide defence and slipped in Nicholas Bucco who opened up his body and looked to slot the ball into the bottom corner but again Lewis Moss was up to the task.
Ten minutes later City captain Evan Kostopoulos looked to have seriously injured his elbow but he was courageously able to continue after receiving treatment.
In the 69th minute, City coach Michael Matricciani made a double substitution in search of that season-saving winner. The youngster Massimo Falco replaced Nicholas Bucco and the returning Tom Love replaced Chris Pepe.
In the 80th minute, huge appeals for a pass back were waved away by the referee and the game looked destined for a scoreless draw.
The draw summed up a frustrating night for City as they had the better chances in the game but couldn’t capitalise. Luckily for City, the result didn’t alter the table drastically as South Adelaide drew 1-1 with Croydon Kings.
All is to play for as the relegation battle heats up and City face Adelaide United at VALO Football Centre on Saturday, June 15.
