Adelaide City have kicked off their 2019 WNPL season by recording an impressive 6-1 win over a strong FFSA NTC side on Friday night.
It was a good day in the office for the Black and White, especially for Dylan Holmes who scored a hattrick, and Daniela Di Bartolo with a brace. Tiarn Powell also made her way onto the scoresheet with a goal just after the half-hour mark.
Holmes opened her scoring account in the eighth minute, finishing off a fantastic cross by Di Bartolo with great control at the near post.
There was a heart-in-mouth moment when Kendall Jenner tried to tip a NTC player’s strike over the bar, but it rebounded off her gloves and fell just in front of the goal-line and sent the goalkeeper scrambling to hold on.
In the 37th minute, Powell capitalised on a poor back pass between the NTC defence and easily rounded the keeper to slot her goal in.
In similar fashion to the first, Holmes found the back of the net by tucking in a beautiful cross from Di Bartolo, netting her second goal right at the halftime mark.
There was a slight reshuffle in formation once the team came back out from the dressing room. Nanako Sasaki was substituted on for Alison Atkins, and Holmes was pushed deeper in midfield.
These changes saw immediate effects in the form of a goal in the 50th minute by Di Bartolo, as she calmly finishes Powell’s cross past the goalkeeper.
Just seven minutes later, Di Bartolo struck again – this time with her signature solo run to beat her defender and round the ‘keeper to shoot into an open goal.
Holmes scored her third and last goal for the night after the hour-mark, she latched onto the ball after NTC’s goalkeeper could not get a proper hold onto Georgia Campagnale’s free kick, and simply knocks it to the back of the net.
NTC found consolation in a spectacular goal at the 84th minute – a superb strike from distance into the top left corner, to deny City their first clean sheet of the season.
City will be facing off against Fulham United in the next WNPL round, at West Beach Parks Football Centre on Friday 15th March at 8:00PM.
