Round 13 – Adelaide City vs West Adelaide match report by Chloe Lau
Adelaide City have copped their second defeat of the season, again at the hands of West Adelaide, in a 1-2 loss on Friday night at Oakden.
It was a fiery and physical affair on the get-go, and the Black and Whites were unable to exert their usual dominance and control on the game. Unfortunately, Chelsie Dawber’s lone goal in the 78th minute was not enough to slash the deficits made by Hellas’ Christie Hillyer and Anna Pritchard.
City saw majority of the possession and chances in the first 20 minutes, but both Daniela Di Bartolo and Tiarn Powell were unable to direct their opportunities on target.
West had a chance to open their scoring account in the 23rd minute with an indirect free kick after goalkeeper Claudia Jenkins was fouled for holding onto the ball for too long. The resulting shot was easily cleared by City’s defence.
However, Hillyer made her way onto the scoreboard just two minutes later. She escaped the attention of City’s defence line and found the back of the net with a header at the end of a cross from the right flank.
In the 30th minute, keeper Jenkins tried to stop Pritchard’s tame shot off the end of a clearance, but unfortunately, she was caught in two minds and wrong-footed, and the ball rolled past her into goals.
There were two consecutive chances for City right before the half-time whistle – both Powell and Dylan Holmes forcing West’s ‘keeper Sarah Willacy into diving saves to secure their two-goal margin heading into the break.
Daniela Di Bartolo almost got a goal to her name in the 55th minute, when she sent a curler of a ball towards the goal, to force Willacy into a phenomenal save to deny Di Bartolo her chance.
In the 78th minute, City finally scored courtesy to a header by Dawber which almost mimicked that of Pritchard’s goal. Georgia Campagnale whipped in a beautiful cross from left wing to find Dawber at the far post, and she snuck it past the small gap between Willacy and the woodwork.
City looked to be more awake and controlling of the match after Dawber’s goal to push for the equaliser, however West’s defence were strong and impenetrable to hold onto their one-goal advantage to close out the match.
Adelaide City will face Adelaide University next Friday night at West Beach Parks. Kick-off at 6:15PM.
