City Close On Ladder Leaders

Adelaide City moved to within four points of ladder leaders Campbelltown after they defeated West Torrens Birkalla at Adelaide Shores in Round 14 of the 2018 National Premier Leagues South Australia season.

The 2-0 victory was City’s tenth of the season as they now sit third and in search of a vital top-two finish with eight games to go in the regular season.

City started off the match confidently, taking control of the possession and the tempo of the game in the early stages.

Their hard work throughout the opening 20 minutes paid off, as they grabbed the first goal of the game through left-back Shannon Day.

The Black and Whites received a corner, and Nic Bucco’s resulting set-piece found Day, who blasted the ball past Alexander Woodlands with a bullet header, giving his side a well-deserved early lead.

The goal, however, seemed to be a spark for Birkalla, as they began to press their opponents as they controlled the tempo of the clash for the rest of the half.

However, it was City who went into half-time with a healthy 1-0 lead.

Following the break, the hosts continued their search for an equaliser, as ex-City man Fumiya Suzuki looked menacing for his side on the right flank.

Jake Monaco almost grabbed the elusive goal for his side as he collected the ball and curled a shot from the corner of the 18-yard-box that smacked against the bottom of the upright.

City, however, grabbed the second goal of the game and seemingly put the result to rest in the 67th minute through Anthony Costa.

The lively Joel Allwright found the ball at the byline and buried in a low, hard cross as Costa tapped in from close range.

It was Costa’s 12th goal of the season, moving him to equal top of the goalscoring charts alongside MetroStars’ Christian Esposito.

City managed to hold out for the clean sheet, and head into the week off with a valuable three points as they get ready to host Adelaide United Youth in a fortnight at Adelaide City Park.
