Adelaide City recorded their first win of the 2019 NPL SA season with a comfortable 2-0 win over Adelaide United Youth on Saturday night.
First half goals from Marcos Flores and Anthony Costa ensured the three points for the Black and Whites in a highly entertaining game of football.
It was an open game from the first whistle, with both teams looking to play entertaining, attacking football.
The home side, however, were the team to draw first blood with Marcos Flores netting his second City in somewhat spectacular fashion, silencing the away fans.
The Argentine spotted United goalkeeper Cameron Cook off his line and from inside his own half unleashed a half-volley which sailed over Cook’s head and into the net.
The goal was Flores’ second in as many games; this time against the club that he represented at A-League level.
Minutes later, City’s advantage was doubled, this time through Anthony Costa.
Benny Kovadio went on a scintillating run before laying off to Costa, who coolly slotted home from inside six yards with the help of the base of the upright.
The goal meant that City went into the break with a healthy 2-0 lead.
The second half was another hotly contested one, with United looking to get back into the game after Apostolos Stamatelopoulos was forced off with an injury.
However, City’s defensive four held strong for the remainder of the match, with central duo Tom Maricic and debutant Elliot Green not letting anything through.
Despite the best efforts of the Young Reds City’s experience shone though over the second 45 with few chances at either end.
Next round Adelaide City travel to Raiders on Friday night as they look to build momentum in the NPL.
