An Anthony Costa brace, a mesmerising hit from Nikola Mileusnic and Josh Mori’s strike helped City maintain its three-point advantage at the top of the table.

City coach Damian Mori fielded a rather depleted team, having to manage a number of absentees through injury and illness.

Shane Tobias, usually a midfielder, ventured into unchartered waters as he was utilised as a centre-back, while Alex Sunasky featured at right-back in a makeshift back-four.

The hosts started the brighter of the two sides with Lewis Farquhar trying his luck from distance and forcing Olympic gloveman Gino De Lucia into a smart save. A neat interchange of passes then culminated in Nicholas Bucco feeding talisman Costa whose quick turn freed himself from the attentions of the defender, before firing his strike over the bar.

Young prodigy Mori however broke the deadlock with a routine finish inside the six-yard box, after he was swiftest to react to the loose ball.

Mileusnic almost doubled the lead moments later, after Costa’s audacious flick set up the winger whose one-on-one attempt struck the woodwork.

As the match wore on, the Black and Whites continued to expose the sluggish Olympic defence, however they could not convert their chances and dominance into more goals during the first period.

The second stanza saw Costa double the host’s advantage on 53 minutes, nonchalantly dispatching his opportunity after meeting Farquhar’s lowly driven cross. That goal was the 22-year-old’s 14th of the season, preserving his prolific scoring rate.

However, a lapse in concentration enabled the visitors to halve the deficit from a corner, against the run of play, and much to the ire of the home supporters.

But the Black and Whites would soon restore its two-goal buffer when Costa slotted his second of the afternoon and his 15th of the year. A deep cross was kept alive by Mileusnic who headed the ball across the face of goal, allowing Costa to beat the keeper and push home into an empty net and make it 3-1.

A last-ditch tackle by Joel Allwright to deny what seemed a certain goal, illustrated the home outfit’s desperation and desire during proceedings.

However, in the 81st minute Mileusnic stole all the headlines, unleashing a thunderous, dipping strike from outside the 18-yard box, hammering the underneath of the crossbar and crossing the goal line.

Adelaide City will be hoping to prolong its invincible form when they entertain Adelaide Comets next Saturday at home.
