Adelaide City secured a dramatic 4-3 win over Campbelltown City in round 6 of the PS4 National Premier League at Adelaide City Park yesterday. Goals from Joel Allwright, Anthony Costa, Mamadi Kamara and Nikola Mileusnic were enough to seal the enthralling affair for City as they moved to top on the league table on goal difference.
The hosts had the better of the chances in the early exchanges with Mileusnic trying his luck from range, cutting in onto his left foot with a tame strike that trickled past the post. It was Campbelltown however that grabbed the opener in fortuitous fashion when Luigi Di Troia’s seemingly innocuous cross looped over the head of Ryan Veitch and into the back-of-the-net.
City did not have to wait long to find an equaliser with Allwright scoring a glancing header from Nicholas Bucco’s corner, and then Costa quickly overturning the deficit minutes later, latching onto a brilliant through ball calmly finishing past gloveman Nick Harpas to make it 2-1.
More chances for City followed, Kamara unleashing a stunning strike from outside the area which had many of the crowd off their seats as the ball agonisingly missed the top corner. An impressive interchange of passes in the final third saw Costa nearly net his second of the afternoon, when meeting Mileusnic’s low cut-back and firing his shot straight at the goalkeeper, leaving the sides to take to the sheds at half time with City maintaining the one goal buffer.
The second-half continued with the Black and Whites dominating proceedings and they extended their advantage courtesy of Kamara. Mileusnic with a marauding run freed himself from the attentions of the chasing defenders, before squaring the ball across the face of goal where Kamara eventually slotted.
But the two goal buffer was short-lived as Iain Fyfe was left unmarked to head home from a corner. The Red Devils were then awarded a contentious penalty, and Thomas Strain made no mistake dispatching the subsequent spot kick to restore parity.
However, Adelaide City were rewarded for their endeavours as winger Mileusnic capped off a sensational performance with the winner one minute from time, sending the home fans into scenes of euphoria.
The win sets up a thrilling match of the round home encounter next weekend when City will clash with a competitive Adelaide United who disposed of West Adelaide 2-1 this round, and now sit 3rd on the league table.
