Adelaide City FC has secured the signature of decorated youngster Dylan Smith. The signing is a real coup for the Black and Whites, but fittingly sees Smith return to his junior club to play a key attacking role at one of the top PS4 National Premier League outfits in Australia.
“I am really pleased to be at City, I hope it’s going to be a good year and we are looking forward to success. The squad looks pretty strong and we take the field aiming to win” enthused Smith.
The 20 year old was awarded the Foxtel National Youth League Player of the Year Award at the 2016 Dolan Warren Awards in April last year. He scored seven goals in the Adelaide United Youth Team that successful won the NYL’s 2015/2016 Conference A and was also part of the squad’s NYL Grand Final team.
Playing his early junior football with Cumberland United (recently promoted to this season’s NPL competition), and Birkalla, he then moved to the Black and Whites before departing Adelaide City FC aged just 15 after having spent time in the state’s development program and the South Australian Institute of Sport (SASI), to move to Canberra in 2013/2014 when selected for the Australian Institute of Sport football program.
Upon his return to SA, Smith joined Adelaide United first team on a professional contract. He impressed through his consistent performances. He made his professional debut in the Hyundai A-League against Melbourne City FC on 25 April 2015, and took the field for the Reds when they played England’s EPL legends Liverpool FC at Adelaide Oval in July 2015.
A prolific striker with a deadly eye for goal, Smith’s pace is a constant threat for opposition defenses. His determination and goal focused approach is exciting to watch.
“The team looks strong, it’s a professional environment, just like Adelaide United, and there is competition for spots which only makes the squad stronger. I felt comfortable with the team during trial matches and it was a good preparation for the season. The Coach has me in good condition” said Smith.
Having taken the field in recent pre-season trial matches, his speed and class are obvious. Smith’s first taste of NPL action for his new club will be this Thursday night, when City takes on Campbelltown in a Grand Final rematch to kick off the new season. “I cant wait, it’s a massive rivalry (something I haven’t been part of for a while) and we really want to do well.”
See Smith and Adelaide City 7:30pm this Thursday night, 16 February 2017 at Steve Woodcock Reserve when the Black and Whites take on rivals Campbelltown City in a Grand Final rematch to kick off the new season. You won’t want to miss this one!
